United States Adventures: Territory of American Samoa

The United States Territory of America Samoa is a tropical paradise composed of several islands in the south pacific.  Today we are looking at just a few adventures to be found among these islands.

Snorkeling

American Samoa is a great place for snorkeling enthusiasts with warm clear waters and an abundance of tropical fish and coral reefs.  Specifically the islands are home to over 950 species of fish and over 250 species of coral.  For some of the best snorkelling in the islands explore the waters off secluded Ofu beach.

Swimming At Leone Falls

The village of Leone was the ancient capital of the island of Tutuila and the site where the first missionaries came to visit the islands.  Today it is home to a catholic church which is a good starting point for those looking to swim at the nearby falls.  Other interesting nearby swimming opportunities can be found at leala sliding rock which is used as a slide by the local village children.

Luma Village Area

Luma Village is a great starting point for several interesting activities.  Visitors should ask locals for directions if they want to go searching for the cave of Ma'ava.  The cave is named for a ledgendary giant from local lore.  Other nearby points of interest include the tomb of the Tu'i Manu'a and Fagamalo Cove.

Rose Atoll

Rose Atoll is an uninhabited tropical wildlife refuge.  It contains the largerst population of giant clams in all of American Samoa making it a popular snorkelling and diving location.  Dolphins, whales,  tuna sharks, mahi mahi, several varieties of birds and turtles can also be spotted on or near the island.

Fagatogo Market

Fagatogo Market is best visited on Friday nights when it turns into the social center of Tutuila island.  Food stalls and produce are the main things to find here and one of the best places to mingle with locals.  On Saturday mornings the market remains busy, and animated evangelists with accompanying gospel music singers can often be found among the market bustle.
